Transit,
Walking & Biking in the We start the 2005 legislative session with great momentum for transit but also several challenges. Public support for transit is strong and growing, and everyone is asking “What is next after Hiawatha?” The business community is backing tax increases to fund more transportation. And, several key anti-transit Representatives were defeated in last fall’s elections. However, the challenges remain large. Metro Transit is facing a budget shortfall of up to $50 million for the next two years, even without any additional budget cuts, due to declining revenues and high inflationary costs. The legislature must come up with a balanced budget for 2006-2007 that addresses a $1.4 billion deficit, including inflation. And the Governor’s renewed pledge not to raise taxes will make budget decisions needlessly more difficult. With your help, TLC will be fighting for increased, dedicated funding for transit, for greater accountability in transportation spending, and to preserve the high quality transit system that we do have.
