The 35W Bridge Collapse
The 35W bridge collapse is a dark time for transportation in our state, but it has also been a reminder of how heroic things can happen when we face a crisis together. We believe this crisis is an opportunity to bring Minnesotans together for a long-term, balanced solution for our transportation problems.
Transit for Livable Communities was founded to refocus transportation priorities toward people by helping more people participate in transportation and development decisions.
We look forward to working together to bring balance to our transportation system by connecting our communities through transit, bicycling, walking, and transit-oriented-development.
Transit for Livable Communities' Comments on 35W Bridge Design
On October 8, 2007, Transit for Livable Communities wrote a letter to MnDOT Commissioner Carol Molnau, outlining comments and concerns about the proposed design of the new I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River. The comments focus on limiting the size of the bridge, adding transit options on the bridge, and improving bicycle and pedestrian accommodations along the River beneath the bridge. Transit for Livable Communities' Policy on a New 35W Bridge
- Full consideration should be given to making the new 35W Bridge “LRT ready”
- At this time, the Washington Avenue Bridge should continue to be the priority alignment for getting the Central Corridor LRT over the Mississippi River
- Given the excellent bicycle and pedestrian facilities that currently cross the River near the 35W Bridge, the focus of improved bicycle and pedestrian accommodations should be routes below the bridge on both sides of the River
- MnDOT should explain its assumptions for future traffic that would make it necessary to add two extra traffic lanes resulting in a 60% increase in the width of the bridge.

Transit for Livable Communities' Policy on Transportation Policy/Spending
- The Governor should call a special legislative session to enact a comprehensive, balanced transportation package that includes significant new revenue for public transit, bicycling and walking
- “Fix it First” should be Minnesota’s top priority for roads and bridges
- MnDOT and the Metropolitan Council’s decision-making process for transportation policy and spending should be more inclusive, transparent, and accountable

Transit for Livable Communities' Policy on Coping with Rerouted Traffic
- TLC asks everyone to be courteous and patient as they cope with increased traffic on alternate routes. Ride transit, carpool, walk, or bike as much as you can. For additional information, click here.
