Minnesota Traffic Fatalities Decline 41% Since 2003

From 2003 to 2013, the number of traffic fatalities in Minnesota declined by 41 percent, according to Minnesota Motor Vehicle Crash Facts, published annually by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. In 2013, there were 77,707 crashes(12% more than 2012), resulting in the death of 387 people (8 fewer than 2012).

Bicycle and pedestrian crashes combined were 2% of all crashes but 11% of all traffic deaths in 2013. Over 1,700 vehicle crashes with a bicyclist or a person walking resulted in 41 deaths. During the last ten years, bicycle and pedestrian deaths have fluctuated but are trending slightly downward.
