What's On the Line for the 2008 Legislative Session?
Plenty. Plans are afoot to reintroduce and pass the transportation bill from last session...the one that fell only two votes short of overriding the Governor's veto. Plus, the Central Corridor light rail transit line needs $140 million in state bonding to stay on track. Union Depot Purchased for Regional Rail Hub
In late October, the Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority agreed to buy the historic Union Depot from the U.S. Postal Service for use as a multimodal transit hub. Midtown Greenway Bridge Opens
The Martin Olav Sabo bike and pedestrian bridge officially opened on November 8, 2007. Minnesota’s first cable-stayed bridge, the Midtown Greenway’s final phase links the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes with the Mississippi River. Check it out!

Transit-Oriented Development Is Key to Mitigating Climate Change
In a comprehensive review of dozens of studies, published by the Urban Land Institute, the researchers conclude that urban development is both a key contributor to climate change and an essential factor in combating it. "This is very much in line with what we're seeing in Minnesota," says Dave Van Hattum, Policy & Advocacy Program Manager for Transit for Livable Communities. "Policymakers are beginning to realize that thoughtful urban development is a key step in making our communities more environmentally friendly."
Survey Shows Americans Prefer to Spend More on Mass Transit and Highway Maintenance, Less on Roads
In a survey conducted by Smart Growth America and the National Association of Realtors®, 90 percent of respondents believe new communities should be designed so we can walk more and drive less, and that public transportation should be improved and accessible. "No surprise there," says Joan Pasiuk, Program Director of Transit for Livable Communities' Bike/Walk Twin Cities initiative. "With increasing concern about climate change and congestion, many people are looking for new ways to get around town." Learn more...

Central Corridor Station Area Planning. The City of St. Paul is hosting workshops to present and discuss the results of the October roundtable discussions on stations and stops along the line. Each workshop will feature an open house from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and public “pin-up” and feedback sessions from 6:30-9:00 p.m. All workshops will be held at the Central Corridor Resource Center

Stacey Peacock Joins Transit for Livable Communities
Stacey joined TLC in November 2007, after spending several years as the Accounts Payable Manager at Mississippi Market. She brings an extensive range of business and financial management experience: from Deputy City Auditor/Payroll Mgr for the City of Berkeley, Ca; to Business Manager for Reuben Lindh Learning Center, to Co-founder and Administrative Director of the Minnesota School of Acupuncture and Herbal Studies. She also owned and operated her own wilderness resort in Ely, MN, where she catered to non-motorized leisure activities and adventures.
