TAKE ACTION

TLC’s members and volunteers make change possible!  Along with hundreds of people, we successfully pushed for the Hiawatha LRT (the first light rail line in the Twin Cities), won two dedicated funding sources for state and regional transit systems, and contacted countless state and local decisionmakers to earn their support for increased transit, bicycling, and walking.

We’re pleased with the changes around us, and also recognize the distance we have yet to go. Too many people and communities are still cut off from opportunity. Existing transportation choices limit safe and realistic access to employment, education, support systems, and medical care.

In 2009-2010, TLC has identified these key opportunities for transformation:

  1. Complete Streets: TLC has joined the statewide coalition working for legislation in 2010 that would create safe streets for all users, regardless of age or ability.
  2. Transit funding: Several regional transitways will apply for bonding funds in the 2010 legislative session
  3. Transitway corridors: With the new funding source in place, regional transitways are moving forward. TLC will participate in public opportunities for decisionmaking throughout the year. Additionally, we will encourage legislators and the Governor to support requests for bonding in 2010.
  4. Educating candidates in the 2010 Governor’s race about the importance of increased transportation choices around the state.

Here’s how you can help us transform our transportation system:

  • Become a member. You’ll join 10,000 Minnesotans who support increased access, choices, and mobility for transit users, bicyclists, and pedestrians. You’ll receive monthly updates on our work and opportunities to take action for transit, bicycling, and walking. (No membership fees; donations welcome!)
  • Volunteer. Member teams in the east and west metro meet monthly to work on our campaigns for Complete Streets (supporting safe roads for all users, regardless of mode, age or ability) and improved transit. TLC volunteers do outreach, contact elected officials, learn about the issues, and work together for local and regional change.
  • Check our online calendar regularly for community events and public participation opportunities.
  • Join us online. Read and comment on our blog, share your story with us, check out our pictures on Flickr, and become a fan on on Facebook.

Your involvement makes a difference – we look forward to working together to shape Minnesota’s future!
