Walking and Bicycling - Our ApproachWalking and bicycling are good for our bodies, our environment, and our communities—plus they’re just plain fun. Our transportation system should better support walking and bicycling, ensuring that more people have opportunities to walk and bike safely and conveniently. Minnesota’s current land use is often spread out and caters mostly to cars. Basic infrastructure like sidewalks, bikeways, and bicycle parking can be sporadic or missing altogether. Many roads have so many lanes of fast-moving traffic that it’s impossible for bicyclists and pedestrians to share the road—or even safely cross the street. In Minnesota, as in the rest of the country, government spends very little on pedestrians and bicyclists when it funds transportation infrastructure, teaches traffic safety, or pays to have children bused to school. We’re working to change this.
